Two stunning trailers for what Motomu Toriyama is calling "the ultimate...RPG experience."
The Cloud Message Magazine just released today offers a few new details about next year's eagerly anticipated futuristic RPG releases, Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII exclusively for the PS3.
In a series of brief interviews in the magazine, big names from each title answered questions about their work on the game, and, while most of the answers were fairly standard vague but hype-inducing replies, there were a few interesting new tidbits. Although begrudging with specifics, FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama describs the battle mechanics as an "active dynamic system" that takes place without leaving the main map. You can probably anticipate something similar to FFXII's MMO-esque real-time battles.
Toriyama also stated that his team's goal is to "offer the ultimate single player RPG experience," which, despite FFXI's relative success, has always been Square's strong suit. No reason was given for the lack of a demo, but he hinted that would be arriving very soon. Art director Isamu Kamikokuryo closed out the interview by summing up the game as "stylish chaos."
Details were even more sparse for Versus, but rest assured that, despite the sci-fi look, it won't veer too far from the established Final Fantasy formula. You will defend your kingdom from an unknown outside threat using the familiar summons, swords, and sorcery.
In their QA, staff expressed both their fear and excitement as the work nears its finish. As important as it has been to them, they realize that it's even bigger for some of their fans. Script writer Nojima Kazunari describes the story for this iteration as "Myth vs. Reality." Not much else of substance could be gleaned from the interview, but watching the video above and seeing the prominent display of so many names associated with the Kingdom Hearts series lends strong support to the rumor that versus battle system will follow a similar action-oriented scheme.
