It turns out the Xbox 360 avatars might actually have something Nintendo's game-changing Mii's don't: microtransaction fees!
Whether you want Xbox Live avatars or not, they're coming, and an ambiguous at best answer from Microsoft's John Schappert about future microtransaction fees hints that future customization will cost a bit of coin.
But enough speculation, let's go to the tape:
"[Microtransactions] may be in the future. In the near term, we want to launch these with great customization and a great library of accessories this fall. I think there is a lot more we can do with them. You will see us continue to add experiences that make use of the avatar. Our goal is not to create a sterile environment where you move furniture around. It's about how can we make our gaming experiences better," Schappert said.
That sounds like a simultaneous shot against Nintendo AND Sony Home. Good form, but how will the Live community respond to efforts to monetize something many observers already consider a "Mii-too" addition to the Xbox Live service?

Some see this as a bad thing, others don't care, and others are excited by the prospect. I think it's really a matter of Microsoft offering customers the opportunity to customize via microtransactions, and NOT forcing them. If you want to customize for a few bucks here and there, go right ahead, but no one is twisting your arm to do it.
