Rock Band 2 was made official on Monday, and thankfully it will support cross-title compatibility for all past and future downloadable songs.
The announcement was made by IGN today, in which developer Harmonix promised that Rock Band 2 will play all downloadable tracks released to this point, and of course, all future songs. What's more, Rock Band 1 owners won't have to upgrade should they choose to continue downloading fresh tracks.
That said, Harmonix is planning gameplay enhancements to help encourage the purchase of the sequel. Primary among them are "upgraded peripherals," improved online play, and a party-mode for fast startup, though specifics have yet to be revealed. But Rock Band 1 instruments will still work with Rock Band 2, reports IGN.
Rock Band 2 will release first on Xbox 360 this September and later in the year on "all relevant platforms," presumably which include at least PS3, Wii, and PS2.
In May, Activision announced Guitar Hero World Tour for Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, and PS2. The Rock Band rival includes all wireless instruments, a more robust drum peripheral, online multiplayer, a song creation mode (for original material and covers), but no backwards compatibility of Guitar Hero 3 song downloads.
