Emergency Mayhem Disrupts Wii In 2008

I'm reading: Emergency Mayhem Disrupts Wii In 2008Tweet this!

Codemasters resuscitates cancelled PS2/Xbox project.

Aspiring (light-hearted) EMTs/civil servants, your game concept has arrived: Emergency Mayhem, a Wii-exclusive police/firefighter/paramedic driving game/mini-game collection, is headed our way in Q2 2008 from Codemasters.

Emergency Mayhem thrusts gamers into Crisis City, an aptly-titled epicenter of chaos in which players must take on more than 30 missions as a police officer, firefighter, or paramedic. After racing to the scene of an accident in the appropriate vehicle, players will be tasked with solving a unique mini-game tied to the humorous situation. Codemasters promises the launching of escaped prisoners via trampoline and banana tossing at curious apes amongst the mini-games, with the Wii Remote used as a wrench, fire hose, and the aforementioned banana hurler (among other things).

Though currently a Wii exclusive, Emergency Mayhem began life as a PlayStation 2/Xbox title announced by Acclaim Entertainment in 2004. When the company folded later that year, so did the project, but Emergency Mayhem will finally see release from Codemasters in the second quarter of next year.

[Exclusive] Feature: 25 Games You Shouldn't Overlook

I'm reading: [Exclusive] Feature: 25 Games You Shouldn't OverlookTweet this!

You've already memorized the list by heart: Rock Band, Bioshock, Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, The Orange Box, etc. The list of AAA titles this year is huge, but as you continue your slog through the malls to find the perfect gift, don't forget that there are more than just those games out there.

With so many huge titles out there, it's inevitable that many perfectly good games will be shunted to the side in favor of their bigger, flashier console-mates.

But think about this: maybe your giftee already has all of the top titles, or your friend is an indie kid who doesn't like anything anybody else thinks is cool, or maybe you have a little holiday cash of your own burning a hole in your pocket. Whatever the reason or whoever you're shopping for, Sports Legends has a list of the five games for each platform that may not have been critical or mainstream darlings, but definitely deserve a second look this holiday season.

Wii.

Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasue

"Zack & Wiki is a puzzle solving adventure that might look easy thanks to its colorful visuals and cutesy characters but it's anything but: the game will challenge you nearly as much as the NY Times Sunday crossword."

Trauma Center: New Blood

"With two surgeons in the same hospital, there's a lot more than just equal opportunity at work here. The best addition that New Blood brings to the table is its multiplayer co-op mode. Two players can work together to complete the various operations, with each doctor receiving their own separate score; naturally, this allows for a competitive angle that further ramps up the tension and anxiety already innate in Trauma Center series."

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

"Umbrella Chronicles does a lot of things right. It combines the atmospheric charm of the ResEvil series with awesome light-gun gameplay, then throws in a wealth of bonus material to unlock and discover. It's the perfect way to prepare yourself for the upcoming Resident Evil 5."

Geometry Wars: Galaxies

"The Wii version of Geometry Wars is a great port and the developers overcame the one potential hurdle--the controls. You move with the Nunchuk's analog stick, activate your bombs with the C button and aim your shots with the Wii Remote. It works surprisingly well, though some hardcore players will probably find it less accurate than a dual-analog setup. The simple graphics also translate well to the Wii and the game retains the awesomely psychotropic visuals."

Battalion Wars 2

"The character-driven plot is entertaining and provides a few good laughs. The visual style is consistent at every turn, with gorgeously rendered cut scenes and almost Disney-styled game sprites. Time-specific filters added to scenes as well as some amazing anime-style tank and helicopter drawings look right at home in the BW universe, marking Kuju's astounding attention to visual detail."

Xbox 360.

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation

"Like a deck of cards, Namco Bandai has been shuffling its games among next-generation consoles in hopes of a winning hand. One of its most popular franchises--the Ace Combat flight-action series--deals a surprising new hand with an exclusive engagement on Xbox 360."

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground

After skating with Tony Hawk for almost a dozen titles, the Birdman's brand of virtual skateboarding is starting to feel a little stale. However, Proving Ground manages to breathe some new life into the franchise and it should please virtual thrashers who haven't yet tired of the franchise's formula.

FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage

"On looks alone, Ultimate Carnage could easily take top prize as you tear across farmland at a hundred miles per hour, cut through wooden fencing and junkyard piles, all while slamming into the competition. It's a beautiful sight, indeed. From urban speed traps, to mountain bypasses, to destruction derby arenas--everything looks phenomenal and runs smoothly without a single hitch."

Conan

"The long and satisfying boss battles against huge fiends like the Elephant Demon and Sand Dragon fare better, even if their timed button-pressing cues owe a great deal to God of War. Waiting more than half a minute for the last checkpoint to load each time you die doesn't do wonders for immersion, but slowly whittling each deity down to size provides some of Conan's most fulfilling moments."

BlackSite: Area 51

"That said, the gunplay, which follows the standard FPS formula of 'see bad guys, shoot bad guys,' is solid and fun; it's also bolstered by an interesting morale system where, if you perform well, your comrades get a small boost to their own skills. But let your team get into dire straits and their abilities take a small penalty. It's not revolutionary but it is an interesting system that rewards skilled gunplay."

PS3.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

"... while Uncharted will frustrate you, it also has the capacity to be thrilling and fun. The game offers up some amazing visuals and the gameplay is perfectly paced. You're always doing something interesting, whether it's investigating ancient ruins, trading bullets with modern-day pirates, or skydiving out of a burning airplane. And even though I never truly bought into the story, I still wanted to help Nathan solve the mystery behind Sir Francis Drake's diary."

Folklore

"Folklore also plays out in a fairly linear fashion, though the levels that you traverse are interesting. From the Hell Realm to the Faery Realm to the Undersea City, the locales are unique and wonderful. Despite the game's faults, I was drawn into the game for the same reasons that we are drawn into fairy tales--I wanted to see what was just around the next corner. "

Skate

"While the search for money and recognition is the driving force behind this game, there are plenty of side challenges to divert your attention. There's also more than ample opportunity for skating around the city and just messing around; which may actually be the most fun aspect of the game and makes me wonder if these games even need set goals."

Sega Rally Revo

"People looking for the thrill of lighting paced races should look no further. Rally throws you into the driver's seat without much fuss, and races rarely disappoint your hunger for speed. But fans of racing games full of special objectives and cool upgrades will be disappointed; there's something kind of refreshing about this simple approach, but it doesn't give the gamer much motivation to play for the long haul."

Warhawk

"Going online is delightfully painless and simple, and as soon as you join a game, your character will spawn at your chosen drop point. Immediately, there is no doubt you are at war; bullets are flying by your head, bombs are exploding off in the distance, and a thick cloud of smoke billows out of a burning building."

DS.

Orcs and Elves

"Orcs and Elves is a classic dungeon romp with straightforward gameplay: armed with a weapon and a talking magic wand, you move through an underground environment fighting all kinds of monsters, solving puzzles and grabbing all kinds of loot. However, the magic of Orcs & Elves goes much deeper. This is one of those weird "one more minute" gaming experiences where, once you get started, it becomes extremely difficult to stop."

Dementium The Ward

"One of the more challenging aspects of the game revolves around only being able to hold one item at a time. Initially it was frustrating to choose between holding a flashlight to see or a weapon to defend myself, but when the first monstrous larva broke out of an incubator and slimed in my direction, I discovered just how frightening the dark can be. "

Cooking Mama

"The sequel is much better because it incorporates more recipes, more tools and tasks, and more modes and bonuses. You can still prepare each dish with Mama looking over your shoulder but there is also a mode where you prepare specific dishes for a virtual friend: there are no instructions and if you mess up even one step, you ruin the entire dish. It can be frustrating to have to start over a dish just for one little mistake but it's also addictively fun."

Touch Detective 2 1/2

"This curiously named sequel is basically the same game as the first--Mackenzie still lives in her house with her butler, Cromwell, and Funghi, the sidekick of who-knows-what species. The spaced-out Penelope shows up with a problem and Chloe isn't far behind, ready to stick her Super Sleuthing nose into everyone's business."

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations

"If you loved the first two installments in the franchise, then Trials and Tribulations definitely has more of what you're looking for. Newcomers to the series will be better served by picking up the first Phoenix Wright as part of the series' charm lies in getting to know the characters over time."

Top

PSP.

SOCOM: US Navy SEALs: Tactical Strike

The SOCOM series has gained notoriety not only for having game titles as long as some term papers, but also for producing quality shooters in modern settings. It's not much of a stretch, then, that the franchise would wade into the squad-based tactical shooter arena as they have with Tactical Strike. Luckily for fans of the series, this first entry is a worthy enjoyable first foray into the genre.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2

"Once you get a grip on how to kill and not be killed, the flood gates will open for you. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 has more content than you will ever know what to do with. There are no experience levels in Monster Hunter, and your primary means of advancement are through improving your gear by crafting materials obtained from downed foes, the environment, mining, farming, or fishing."

Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command

Whether you're new to the Warhammer 40k universe or a hardcore vet, you owe it to yourself to check out Squad Command. This turn-based strategy game is a great addition to the franchise and should tide you over until the inevitable release of Dawn of War 2.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology

"Honestly, Radiant Mythology does absolutely nothing new--especially if you've played Tales games before--but I found myself having a lot of fun hacking and slashing away through beautiful dungeons. Also, the story is more than serviceable, thanks to the new characters and the fun of crossover characters. RPG fans who have been looking for something to take on the road should definitely try out Radiant Mythology."

Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron

"The Battlefront games can quickly be summed up as a beefy Battlefield 1942 mod with a coat of Star Wars paint over the battlefields of Europe. Unique to the Battlefront games are the space battles, which pit two opposing fleets against each other and offer much TIE fighter vs. X-wing goodness."

New Duke Nukem Forever Trailer Retains Corniness

I'm reading: New Duke Nukem Forever Trailer Retains CorninessTweet this!

After six long years, 3D Realms premiered a new teaser trailer for the infamously delayed Duke Nukem Forever. Behold, the cheese.

"The release is still 'when it's done,' but you can expect more frequent media releases," said 3D Realms' George Broussard in speaking to Shack News. He reassured, "we have considerable work behind us."

Duke Nukem Forever was first announced for PC in 1997 as the sequel to Duke Nukem 3D, the second game in the series. The infamous first-person shooter has since been plagued with design and graphics engine changes spanning an incredible 11 years.

When asked if Forever would be coming to Xbox 360 in addition to PC, Broussard told Shack News, "I don't think we've stated that yet for the record but your observations are probably noted."

MTV And Jerry Bruckheimer Form New Game Studio

I'm reading: MTV And Jerry Bruckheimer Form New Game StudioTweet this!

MTV Games said Wednesday that it has teamed up with Jerry Bruckheimer, the renowned movie and television producer, to create unique new video games.

"By joining MTV Games with Bruckheimer's blockbuster track record for creating successful entertainment properties in film and television, both new and experienced gamers can expect what promises to be some of the most entertaining, challenging, and unique games," said MTV in a presser.

Bruckheimer is best known for his work on Top Gun, Armageddon, Enemy of the State, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Black Hawk Down, Pirates of the Caribbean, and National Treasure.

Given his lack of experience in games, Bruckheimer will rely on his storytelling chops and Hollywood contacts when making new titles.

"Video games represent a new and innovative medium for what we've always tried to do, which is to tell great stories," he said. "I look forward to working with MTV Games to create new original game stories, always looking for ways to innovate the medium."

EA Announces New Sci-Fi Shooter, Tiberium

I'm reading: EA Announces New Sci-Fi Shooter, TiberiumTweet this!

Futuristic first-person shooter coming to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in fall 2008.

Developed by EA Los Angeles, Tiberium promises to be "a unique blend of first-person shooting and tactical squad combat," as man battles alien for control of the earth's last remaining power source.

"After two years of pre-production, it is exciting to finally reveal this game and its rich fiction to the world," said Chris Plummer, the game's executive producer. "We've put a lot of effort into evolving the tactical shooter experience by taking core gameplay compulsions like commanding, choice, and dominating your enemies and delivering them in first-person."

Players will control multiple infantry, armor, and air squads over an environmentally-devastated world in either single-player campaign or online multiplayer.

Tiberium is scheduled for release on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC next fall.

Sony: PS3 Becoming Lead Console For Developers

I'm reading: Sony: PS3 Becoming Lead Console For DevelopersTweet this!

PlayStation boss Jack Tretton says developers are increasingly using the PS3 over Xbox 360 as the lead development platform for new games.

Burnout Paradise first developed for PS3

"We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms such as EA's Burnout," said Tretton in an interview with IGN.

"We are seeing tremendous progress from the third party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits."

When developers first create games on PS3, they take advantage of the PS3's unique hardware capabilities, maintains the chief executive, before adding, "you will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday."

The Xbox 360 has typically been used as the lead development console for multiplatform games having launched a full year before PS3 and Wii and given its larger U.S. installed base.

In October, Midway developer Mike Bilder said developing first on PS3 allows for faster porting between PS3 and Xbox 360 without compromising the game experience.

E3 Returns To Los Angeles, Without Booth Babes

I'm reading: E3 Returns To Los Angeles, Without Booth BabesTweet this!

The Entertainment Software Association announced the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit on Tuesday, though it will still lack the glitz and fanfare of past shows.

They'll be in LA, just not at E3

"The event will continue to focus on the business of the computer and video game industry, with an emphasis on press events and small meetings with media, development, and other key sectors," said the ESA in a statement.

"While there will be opportunities for game demonstrations, the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years."

Last year's E3 was held in Santa Monica, California. The event was largely criticized for its reduced size when compared to previous shows and lack of a single, convenient location.

E3 2008, for media only, will take place from July 15-17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Halo 3 Purchased By 52% Of All Xbox 360 Owners

I'm reading: Halo 3 Purchased By 52% Of All Xbox 360 OwnersTweet this!

As of November, 4.1 million Americans have bought Halo 3 -- more than half of the current 7.9 million Xbox 360 owners in the U.S.

"The power of Halo 3 is quite evident," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier in speaking with GameDaily. "When it released it drove hardware sales substantially... That is why content is so important - a killer game drives hardware adoption more than any other factor (including price cuts)."

By comparison (noting that Halo 3 has been out two months longer), Super Mario Galaxy has been purchased by 19 percent of all U.S. Wii owners so far (6 million). Nintendo says it's pleased with the service so far rendered by the Italian plumber.

"Galaxy will have extremely long life and will have extremely large numbers throughout that entire life," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of NOA. "Mark my words, look in six months and no one will have any remembrance that [Galaxy] 'only' did 1.1 million copies in its first month."

BioShock Named AP's Best Game Of 2007

I'm reading: BioShock Named AP's Best Game Of 2007Tweet this!

The critically-acclaimed shooter earns the "best game" award from the world's largest news bureau.

The Associated Press called BioShock, "a thinking person's action game" and "a piece of electronic fiction with a soul."

They added, "There are many positive ways to describe this gripping game and they're all true. There's just nothing else like this eerie vision of an undersea social experiment gone horribly wrong."

The Associated Press, headquartered in New York City, is the world's largest news wire service and distributes stories to some 6,700 nation newspaper, television, and radio outlets.

BioShock (XB360, PC) is second only to The Orange Box currently as the highest rated Xbox 360 game, according to Game Rankings.

Rock Band (XB360, PS3, PS2) won the AP's "Best Game That Involves Getting off the Sofa," The Orange Box (XB360, PS2, PC) took home "Best Deal" honors, and Halo 3 (XB360) was infamously named "The Most Overrated Game of 2007," even though just last week it won TIME's best game of 2007 award.

GameStop Clarifies Wii Reservation Program

I'm reading: GameStop Clarifies Wii Reservation ProgramTweet this!

Gift procrastinators and those unable to locate a Wii in time for Christmas have a one-day shot in securing an IOU from GameStop.

Contrary to what the ill-informed Regginator said last Friday, the Wii raincheck program will run for one day only on December 21 at all U.S. GameStop and EB Games stores.

Reservations must be made in-person and require payment in full ($250) to receive a DVD case containing a gauranteed certificate. The certificates (limited to one per household) can then be exchanged on January 25, 2008 for a real-life, motion-sensing Wii.

GameStop, as usual, will also notify customers by phone when their system has arrived just in case said customers haven't been counting down the days.

Nintendo Frowns Upon Wii Bundle Gouging

I'm reading: Nintendo Frowns Upon Wii Bundle GougingTweet this!

Bundle gouging (n.) - The act of overcharging consumers seeking a high demand product by forcing them to purchase complimentary products.

Reggie says: I'll knock a retailer out for overcharging.

Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime doesn't like when select retailers swindle gamers into buying extra goods for the chance to buy a Wii, which continues to be in short supply more than a year after its launch.

"Retailers have already been given feedback that we are not big fans of that," Reggie told Reuters on Monday. "We think it masks some of the price advantage we have versus our competition and, frankly, the consumer should decide what they want."

Bundle gouging is nothing new to games. Stores like FYE, Wal-mart.com, and Amazon.com regularly require additional purchases even if only a single console is desired.

When asked if Nintendo has threatened such retailers, Reggie said, "We don't have to remind retailers of the strength we have right now. We are simply making an observation and that reinforces our point quite nicely with retailers."

The Verdict:
There are a few things you can do to avoid Wii price gouging: first, don't shop at stores that only sell bundles (i.e. most online stores only sell bundles). Report shady stores directly to Nintendo (go ahead, snitch!), and talk with others who already bought a Wii to find out where they can get one without having to pay for extras.

PC Megahits Crysis And UT3 Flop In Nov. Sales

I'm reading: PC Megahits Crysis And UT3 Flop In Nov. SalesTweet this!

Despite their high-profile, Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 sales fizzled in November according to the NPD Group. Are PC gamers flocking to less expensive consoles?

The simExchange reports that neither Crysis or UT3 managed to sell more than 100,000 units in their debut last month.

Crysis, which requires an unprecedented $1500-$2500 in PC upgrades to play, sold 86,633 copies in the U.S., while Unreal Tournament 3 sold just 33,995 copies.

In January 2005, Vivendi said it sold 1.7 million copies of Half-Life 2 in just two months; much more than either Crysis or Unreal 3 for a similar period.

Though both games were released in the middle of the month, their numbers are clearly less than what EA and Midway had hoped for.

Are gamers abandoning the PC? Without jumping the gun, some believe the PC market is shrinking with exception to a few specific genres like the massively popular World of Warcraft MMO.

Indeed, both Xbox 360 and PS3 offer comparable, if not equal, graphics technology in most cases at a fraction of the cost. What was once the platform for hardcore shooters has seemingly been relegated to second place.

In related news, Midway dropped their PR agency of three years on Monday in favor of more "dedicated" representation.

Sony Hoping To Sell 11 Million PS3s By April 1

I'm reading: Sony Hoping To Sell 11 Million PS3s By April 1Tweet this!

PlayStation chief says he's confident in hitting the mark despite stiff competition from both Wii and Xbox 360.

    Sony ramping up PS3 software

The statement comes shortly after a boost in PS3 sales thanks to a Nov. 2 price cut to $399. According to Sony, PS3 sales have more than tripled since then.

PS3 outsold the Wii for the first time in Japan last month and sold an impressive 466,000 units in the States during the Thanksgiving holiday rush.

With current PS3 sales at an estimated 7 million units worldwide, Sony will have to move 1 million units per month through March 31 to hit their target.

"[PS3] is starting afresh as a console to play games with," Kaz Hirai told the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper this weekend. "Although pricing strategy is important, now we would like to put our strength in the number of software games."

I've now seen Hail to the Chimp three separate times, and each time I've been surprised by what it looks like. You would think at this point I'd expect the part diorama, part paper maché, part pencil-shaded appearance -- and I do -- but it still gets me. I think this is partially because it's one of those games that looks noticeably better on an HDTV than it does in screenshots, but it's also good evidence that you can expect the game to be different from what you've seen in the party game genre.

At its core, Hail to the Chimp is a party game -- you select one of 10 animals and run around fighting three others at a time while trying to complete specific goals. But what makes it different is the context. As the title hints, your goal is to lead an animal/candidate to victory in a political election, which you do by winning challenges. When you select the number of rounds you want to play, it's actually "number of primaries," and this theme carries through the whole game.

In "Yard Signs," you have to plant the most political signs on a given map to win, and games play out (somewhat) like Battlefield control point matches.

In a recent hands-on session, we played modes such as "Political Minefield," where you have to stay alive the longest by avoiding bombs and cars, and "Frontrunner," where you have to stay in the lead as the player with the most clams for two minutes. (Clams serve as your health and make you stronger as you collect more.) You can see these modes' roots in other games -- many of them shooters instead of traditional party games -- but the execution feels unique thanks to the political wrapping.

This wrapping carries throughout the game, so when you're not playing, you'll see newscaster reports running on the menu screen, and you can unlock and watch debate footage, interviews, campaign ads, attack ads, etc. There's quite a lot of footage. Not everything is political, either -- we saw ads with a Moby Dick-esque white whale selling a music CD, and for a phone line for lonely men (the game will be rated "T for Teen") -- so it's clear the developers are trying to create a world that extends at least a bit beyond the election.

When a game gets going and special effects show up all over the map, Hail to the Chimp becomes one of the most colorful titles we've seen.

It's also clear that they're putting more thought into the mechanics than most party games. While combat is simple, with a single button for attacks, you can also block by tapping away from an enemy, or 'faint' and roll out of the way if you have good timing. With so much happening in each mode, these defensive tactics don't look to be the game's focus, but seem like they'll add a nice bit of depth for players who don't want to swing their arms all the time. And since character movement is a bit slower than in most fighters/beat-em-ups, faints definitely seem easier to pull off than moves like parries in Street Fighter III: Third Strike.

And we're pretty sure that's the last time Hail to the Chimp will ever be compared to Third Strike, given its approach. But it's a good idea to think of the game as a melting pot of ideas from other genres, because while "party game" gets you a decent chunk of the way there, it's not a game that you can compare directly to anything else, which is a big part of why we like what we've seen so far. We wouldn't go quite as far as to say it's a party game for people who don't like party games, but it's got a bit of that, and it's certainly more creative and exciting than what we usually see from the genre.

Reggie Talks Wii 3rd Party Quality

I'm reading: Reggie Talks Wii 3rd Party QualityTweet this!

Quality too 'subjective' for Nintendo to filter, evidently.

Will we ever see quality 3rd party
    games that are actually GOOD?

When it comes to Nintendo consoles, it's long been the case that when you venture beyond first-party titles, you are taking your life into your own hands. And whether it's a result of increase interest to cash in on it's blazing success or a dramatic drop in Nintendo's efforts to weed out the crap, it seems Wii is setting a new low in third-party quality, even by past-Nintendo-console standards. So much so that it's become a bona fide issue they're called upon to address by the media.

In a conference call with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime (via Kotaku), the man himself indeed addressed the issue, but you may not like what he had to say. "On any system you will have a range of quality," he began. "Publishers are working extremely hard to take advantage of the Wii and its unique abilities. Those publishers who do a great job enjoy fantastic sales." An interesting theory, but we wonder what Capcom thinks about it in light of Zack & Wiki's performance at retail.

Reggie continued, "As publishers understand how to take advantage of the unique aspects of the remote you will see better and better games. We already have a certification program and publishers need to conform with a number of key aspects to get certified." (We suspect these key aspects are "make a game" and "send us your game".) "What we don't do," he said, "is have some sort of filter for quality, because quality is so subjective. Nintendo is working hand in glove with publishers to share with them our level of expertise with the technology."

Yeah, okay, one man's trash is another man's treasure and all that. But the man who considers Escape from Bug Island treasure is not a man worth knowing. As long as Nintendo lets the market dictate quality assurance, though, we'll just have to hope third party software does indeed improve as developers get a better grasp of the hardware.

[Exclusive Review] Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3)

I'm reading: [Exclusive Review] Unreal Tournament 3 (PS3)Tweet this!

A PC standard our review suspects may thrive on PS3.

Unreal Tournament -- that's a PC game, right? This popular perception persists despite a number of console versions of the franchise (including the criminally overlooked Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict). This time around, it arrives with both platforms squarely on equal footing -- and arguably more hotly anticipated for the PS3. How much that speaks to the narrowing gap between PC and console provides ample fodder for the broader debate that rages across the Net. While that's happening, Unreal Tournament 3 makes a strong argument that it belongs on PS3 regardless of its other venues.

As you can see from these screens, the highly detailed
graphics definitely impress, with absolutely none (if very little) lag online.

For those making this their first plunge into the fray, know this: First and foremost, UT exists as an online multiplayer battleground. Rather than prove otherwise, the addition of a story to the campaign mode resoundingly reinforces the point. The cut-scenes of familiarly bulky-armored space marines repulsing alien hordes make this look like a new Gears of War game, but that's where it ends. When the action starts, the pretty wrapping rips away to reveal the game's simple (but no less compelling) offering of multiplayer shooter essentials.

As an offline training ground, though, it serves its purpose well. At a very basic level, this affords you the opportunity to learn the maps, where the key weapons and armor spawn, and, of course, where to pick up the power-ups like Berserk and UDamage. More importantly, it successfully goes beyond being simply a still-life sanctuary. The computer-controlled bots that fill out the ranks "play" the game convincingly enough to allow you to learn the ropes in friendlier circumstances than getting schooled online. Make no mistake: The primary responsibility for your team's outcome still rests on your shoulders, but you won't feel completely alone. And the opposing team will give you a fight, particularly on higher difficulties.

Highly detailed environments make for very engaging gameplay.

That said, nothing compares to playing the game as intended: online, with real people filling out both teams. But while essential, the offering of modes feels thin, particularly as you pile up the hours over extended sessions. Team deathmatch and capture the flag offer standard, if highly refined, multiplayer fare. The "new" Warfare mode holds out the lone option for a more tactically intricate game with its progression of control points to be taken en route to destroying the enemy's base. Exactly how new it is depends on your point of view; UT vets will find it essentially the same as Onslaught mode from last time out with a few twists. While that doesn't detract from its enjoyment per se, it does leave this latest UT lacking a truly unique new mode around which to base its identity.

On that subject, Warfare also illustrates the continuing fundamental struggles the game faces regarding what it wants to be. UT screams at its adrenaline-pounding loudest in the intimate on-foot settings that originally earned it its reputation. Winding mazes through sci-fi industrial complexes highlight the immediacy of a rocket launcher or flak cannon, punctuated by the long-range strike of a sniper or plasma rifle. Deathmatch and capture the flag play directly to this strength, but Warfare, with its large-scale maps and vehicle-heavy focus, significantly changes the complexion of the action. It plays extremely well in this evolved form and feels almost like getting a whole other game in the same box. But that doesn't satisfy the desire for something more than just deathmatch or capture the flag that plays up close and personal all the time.

Throughout the game (both single-player & online),
you will get to commandeer a nice assortment of vehicles.

On the upside, UT3 handles all its game types equally well no matter which style of play you prefer -- and looks great doing it. Playing with the Sixaxis controller quickly erased any concerns about whether the game would struggle without the traditional PC mouse-and-keyboard setup. The default stick response errs on the little-too-slow side to keep from being spastic for the average user, but it can be dialed up to as twitchy as you like. Whether flying 200 feet above an expansive Warfare map or running full tilt down a hallway unloading a barrage of rockets, the action stays smooth with even and predictable control response. All it takes to really get into the flow of the game is a little practice so you can dial in with your favorite weapons and vehicle.

Once that happens, UT3 starts to grow on you. While it may not trigger the up-all-night marathons of something like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress 2, a certain comfortable familiarity develops that calls you back to play a few rounds every so often. If prior versions are anything to go by, this effect can last almost indefinitely. The game comes well equipped to maintain such a long-term relationship through its easy customization. Like its PC sibling, the PS3 version supports both downloadable maps and mutators for tweaking modes with things like reduced gravity or insta-gib. With cross-compatibility for everything the PC community develops, expect to see plenty of content available. Classic maps like Facing Worlds are already there; in the past, Epic has rewarded fans with significant content packs in the months after release. It wouldn't come as a surprise to find a thriving group of UT3 players playing online a year from now.

It's War of the Worlds all over again

As for today, the arrival of Unreal Tournament 3 stands to be one of the highlights of the year for Net-connected PS3 owners. For many, this will be a fresh experience, lessening the impact of the modest mode options and lack of some fan favorites from prior versions. At the same time, the lessons learned over the years of iteration and the sparkling new graphics engine make this the latest and greatest version for fans of the series. While that experience factor also benefits the bot A.I., that shine may wear off fairly fast for those not planning to play online.

Whether or not you'll find a community playing this game in a year leads back to that earlier question of just how close PC and console gaming have become...and your response to Unreal Tournament 3 will help shape the answer.

Will Blue Dragon 2 Arrive In 2008?

I'm reading: Will Blue Dragon 2 Arrive In 2008?Tweet this!

Speculation fueled by Microsoft Japan comments.

It's clear Blue Dragon was planned from the start to be a franchise. Talk of a sequel began before the game's release in North America and a DS spin-off is confirmed as in the works. So when will that inevitable sequel be coming? Comments from Xbox Japan head Takashi Sensui (via CVG) suggest it could be next year already.

In an interview with Jiji Press, Sensui explained Microsoft's intent to double the number of Xbox 360 games in Japan in the year 2008. Heading off that list of releases will be a proposed Blue Dragon 2.

When the game's producer, Hironobu Sakaguchi, previously discussed a Blue Dragon sequel, he hinted that the game "may be produced as an online title." Whatever form it shows up in, if they're planning to get Blue Dragon 2 out in 2008, we'd expect an official announcement sooner rather than later. We'll keep our ears to the ground.

PLAY Magazine Unveils Tomb Raider Underworld

Lara getting ready for her eighth adventure.

"Lara's adventure takes place after the events of Tomb Raider Legend," reveals PLAY (via Tomb Raider Chronicles). "The emphasis is on bringing Lara's world to life, a lush, vast interactive world that reacts and remembers."

Miss Croft will reportedly leave footprints in the mud and have them later washed away by rain, feature "more natural fluidity to her movements," and more accurately interact with her environment such that kneeling on the ground will only soil a single knee and so forth. Oh, and all dead bodies will realistically remain on screen.

The game is slated for a 2008 release on Xbox 360, PS3, and Windows.

Nintendo: Average Age Of Wii Player Is 29 Years Old

I'm reading: Nintendo: Average Age Of Wii Player Is 29 Years OldTweet this!

Company says vast majority of owners are still core gamers.

In addition to sharing demographic data, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime dismissed the idea that Wii owners are simply buying the machine for Wii Sports.

In a group conference call on Friday, the boss man said that Wii attach rates are actually higher than the PS2 attach rate for the same period, suggesting that a healthy number of games are being sold.

When asked if Nintendo was happy with the current quality of third-party games, Fils-Aime said, "Any system will have a range of quality." He went on to say that developers are "working hard" to push the limits of Wii hardware.

On the subject of online functionality, Reggie dished both good and bad. "We do not anticipate making online playable VC games," he said before speaking on the future possibility of voice communication for Wii.

"Our system has the capability for online voice chat, it's just an issue of deciding on a peripheral."

    The Verdict:
Sounds like voice chat is on its way to Wii -- just a matter of time.

    Nintendo Announces Wii Raincheck Program

This way, there's still "something to put under the tree," Nintendo said in a conference call on Friday.

The program will run exclusively at GameStop through Dec. 31 and is said to guarantee a system before Jan. 29 for persons who advance pay for certificates, while supplies last.

"This shortage benefits no one," said Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime in a group conference call.

Indeed. Analyst James Lin of MDB Capital Group believes that Nintendo has lost over $1 billion dollars on Wii shortages. "It's staggering," he told the New York Times. "They could easily sell double what they're selling."

To help meet demand, Nintendo says it has tripled its distribution workforce for the holidays.

Gamer Arrested For Shooting Threats On Xbox Live

I'm reading: Gamer Arrested For Shooting Threats On Xbox LiveTweet this!

A 19-year-old college student faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and $5,000 in fines for threatening to "shoot up the school" while playing Call of Duty 4.

Allieu Shaw of Gaithersburg, Maryland is being charged with two misdemeanor counts of disrupting school operations while attending Frostburg State University.

Earlier this week, Shaw claimed he was going to shoot up his school in speaking with others over Xbox Live while playing Call of Duty 4. After stating "how he was going to do it," a fellow Xbox Live member from Oregon reported the threat to the Frostburg Police Department.

The incident prompted an additional 40 police officers to patrol the campus on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.

After being arrested, Shaw told investigators that "he was joking and had no intention of following through with the threats," reports the Cumberland Times. He has no previous record with the law, and no weapons or evidence was found after the initial search of his dorm room.

Burnout Paradise Demo Rolls Quietly Onto Xbox 360, PS3

I'm reading: Burnout Paradise Demo Rolls Quietly Onto Xbox 360, PS3Tweet this!

EA released a three level demo of the next-gen racer for both PS3 and Xbox 360 on Thursday.

    It's demo time!

Available now at the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace, the Paradise demo features three playable levels including three-person online play.

We downloaded and compared both versions side-by-side this afternoon, and after a cursory inspection, here's what we know. The PS3 version looks shinier. The Xbox 360 version has rumble. So its pretty much a wash.

More impressive, however, is the games fresh take on the genre. There are no game menus; a voice tutorial helpfully leads the way. It can take a while to get your bearings before running jumps, turning tricks, and winning races, but Paradise show promise in one of the meatiest demos released this year.

The full version hits January 25, 2008. You can check out our latest preview here.

Sony CEO: PS3 'Infinitely More Fun' Than Wii And 360

I'm reading: Sony CEO: PS3 'Infinitely More Fun' Than Wii And 360Tweet this!

Howard Stringer is optimistic of the PS3's future and expectedly thinks his console is more "exciting" than either Wii or Xbox 360.

"The PlayStation 3 will come into its own because its [high-end games] are infinitely more fun, demanding and exciting," said Stringer in speaking with the Guardian.

The boss man feels "much more confident" now given the increased demand of the PS3. Last month, the console surpassed single-month Wii sales for the first time in Japan, something Stringer himself says was helped by ongoing Wii shortages.

"I'm glad that the last few weeks have generated excitement about PlayStation 3," he added. "Everyone's stopped talking about it the way they were six months ago."

Nintendo Stock Sputters, Game Analysts Disagree On Why

I'm reading: Nintendo Stock Sputters, Game Analysts Disagree On WhyTweet this!

Nintendo shares have dropped by 8 percent since November, after its stock price soared more than five-fold over the last two years.

One analysts believes there's nothing to see, saying that the stock is only taking a breather after an incredible, Apple-like run so far.

"Back in 2005, no one could image Nintendo being where it is now," said Mitsushige Akino. "No fundamentals have changed. Nintendo has still got strong earnings momentum."

Yoshihisa Okamoto begs to differ, however.

"People's perception of the PS3 is improving from an underdog to something better, and part of the money that used to flow into Nintendo shares is now going to the Sony stock," he told Reuters.
